INTRANET, what is it?

Intranet is LAN concept that adopted Internet technology, introduced in late 1995.

Intranet is a LAN that uses any standard communications and Internet facilities, likened to surf in the local environment. Intranet generally also connected to the Internet to enable the exchange of information and data with other Intranet network (Internetworking) through the Internet backbone.
