INTRANET, what is it?

Intranet is LAN concept that adopted Internet technology, introduced in late 1995.

Khoe Yao Tung (1997)

Intranet is a LAN that uses any standard communications and Internet facilities, likened to surf in the local environment. Intranet generally also connected to the Internet to enable the exchange of information and data with other Intranet network (Internetworking) through the Internet backbone. Compatibility Intranet (as the Internet) is very high on other systems so easy to implement, learn, develop and reconfigure. Support applications, programs and a broad operating system due to the popularity of the Internet makes the Intranet as the future of the LAN.

Intranet facility privileges not available in the local network (LAN) is conventional:
Display WEB (graphics, multimedia) at the operating system, navigation, application and database
Internet standard facilities: electronic mail (e-mail), file transfer (FTP), remote terminal emulation (Telnet, rlogin), control of remote network devices (SMNP) rich Internet applications such as search engines, mailing lists, newsgroups, archie , gopher, wais, etc.
Universal programming script Common Gateway Interface (CGI), Perl, Visual Basic, C and Java that support database operations Support the integration of databases and software compatibility with existing as with Foxpro, SQL or Oracle LAN technologies such as database management, distributed systems, client server, sharing resources and peripherals will be retained. One of the most important thing in Internet/Intranet is a network security (network security).

This sensitive issue given the commercial telecom networks in use are general (public service communication network), so vulnerable network intrusion and wiretapping and data piracy. A number of advanced security technologies being developed such as firewalls, encryption, encapsulated data packet, id recognition and so forth, so that a distinct advantage when applied in the Intranet. In contrast to the LAN using a protected communication network (VPN – virtual private network) so that the security is relatively more awake enough just using encryption technology. Terminology is more developed than is the technology Intranet Extranet who have an understanding of the Intranet network which is accessible from the outside either through a VPN or public communications media.
